Gerstmann–Sträussler–Scheinker syndrome is an very, very rare neurodegenerative disease caused by a prion that attacks the brain. Usually inherited, it only affects a few families around the world. This disease belongs to a family of diseases called transmissible spongiform encephelopathies (TSEs), which cause the brain to spongify. Over the course of two to ten years, the physical and mental conditions of people with this disease slowly deteriorate until the people are left in a comatose state, followed quickly by death. Not much is currently known these types of diseases, but research is currently being done to find ways to prevent, cure, and treat these types of diseases.
